I solved the washed-out problem of the HDMI-connected monitor by going into Intel Graphics settings -> Display -> select the monitor attached via HDMI -> Advanced. Select the option YCbCr in the color section. Then click Apply.
You then might need to set your monitor (the monitor's own settings) to Black Level "High" instead of "Low".
