Have you tried changing the frequency in SPI.cpp instead that using the function?

C:\arduino-1.5.3-Intel.1.0.4\hardware\arduino\edison\libraries  -> SPI.cpp

Also, what other changes are between the Edison and Arduino sketches? Or it's exactly the same?
